Why Niche Relevant Backlinks Matter in SEO

In SEO, not all backlinks are created equal.

Sure, one is greater than zero.

And to paraphrase, Ted Kubaitis from SEO fight club..”you need a really good reason to say no to backlink”.

But if that link isn’t relevant to your industry or niche, the impact is diluted.

Niche relevant links.. ie backlinks from sites that operate in the same industry, subject area, or audience as you..carry far more weight. They don’t just help PageRank & consequently rankings; they drive referral traffic from people already interested in what you do.

In this post, I’ll explain why niche relevant links matter, share data on their effectiveness, and show how a platform like SERPzilla makes acquiring them easier without resorting to spammy tactics.

Why Niche Relevance Matters in Link-Building

Google has evolved far beyond counting raw backlinks. Today, context and topical authority are everything. Here’s why:

  • Relevance boosts trust. In my experience, links from highly relevant domains tend to pass more ranking power than unrelated ones. A backlink from a SaaS review blog will likely help a SaaS product rank better than a link from a random gardening site (so whether you’re improving SaaS SEO or any other niche.. think relevance)
  • Referral traffic converts. Beyond SEO value, niche links drive actual users who care about your topic. Visitors who land on your site from an industry-relevant blog are far more likely to stick around, subscribe, or convert. I’ve seen leads come in because I was mentioned in a relevant site to our niche.
  • Topical authority compounds. When Google sees consistent signals that your site is part of a trusted niche ecosystem, it rewards you with higher visibility across related keywords.

This is why many agencies (including ours) avoid shotgun link-building. A handful of high-quality, niche relevant links can outweigh dozens of generic ones.

Quantity vs Quality in your backlinks

Now before I go on, I want to make a nuanced point.

It’s not one or the other. The ideal scenario is you get both. Quality relevant links at scale. That is the ultimate win-win. In that case more is better.

(For this reason, press releases are still part of our link-building approach. You get a high number of referring domains at a relatively cheap cost. Plus you dictate the content of that press release to keep it relevant)

What other’s say on Niche vs. Non-Niche Links

Here’s the opinions of a few other industry pros:

  • “Getting a link from a high PageRank page used to always be valuable, today it’s more the relevance of the site’s theme in regards to yours, relevance is the new PageRank.” – interview from an ex-Googler.
  • Ahrefs says the “quality & and relevance of the referring are very important.”
  • “Often, you’ll find that you really only need a few quality topically relevant domains to rank higher on page one, all else equal.” – Robbie Richards.
  • In our own client work, we’ve seen niche placements directly correlate with trial signups and pipeline growth, while generic links added little more than noise.

Simply put: you don’t just need more links; you need the right links.

DR alone is a vanity Metric

DR (Domain rating), DA (Domain authority) are useful metrics to know.

But they are not the north star metric in SEO. (That would be business growth)

On some of my side projects, I use expired domains. Sometimes I redirect. Sometimes I recreate & place a strategic link.

In both cases, you can expect a positive bump in DR. When done right, there’s definitely some use-cases for expired domains.

In the screenshot below, DR jumped massively almost overnight with one of these moves.

However, in this example, there was no real movement in rankings ⬇️

So what’s the lesson on DR?

A shady SEO could promise you higher DR’s. And they could achieve it.

But DR in isolation means nothing. Context is everything.

The Challenges of Building Relevant Links

Here’s the hard part: acquiring niche relevant links at scale isn’t easy.

  • Outreach fatigue is real. Editors and webmasters are bombarded with pitches daily.
  • Not every guest post or niche edit is worth the effort as quality can vary wildly.
  • Doing it manually takes time, relationships, and persistence.

This is where smart platforms can help. And why I personally use & recommend Serpzilla.

How Serpzilla Fits Into a Modern SEO Strategy

I’ve tested different approaches and platforms over the years. And I can honestly say Serpzilla can gives enough options for you to customize in the best possible way.

Here’s why I like it:

  • Customisation at scale. You can filter by topic, country, budget, traffic, domain metrics, and more. That makes it possible to hand-pick links that are niche relevant to your business.
  • Choice of formats. Whether you prefer guest posts (fresh articles) or niche edits (links placed in existing content), Serpzilla provides both.
  • Transparency and control. Instead of taking whatever an agency gives you, you can see the sites, review the metrics, and choose what’s best for your client or business.
  • Play the LLM game too. There’s some compelling evidence to suggest that ranking in ChatGPT & other LLM’s prioritise brand mentions over backlinks. When you submit a guest post to Serpzilla, you shape the narrative by earning both backlink & brand mention.

As I put in my own review:

“Serpzilla is my favourite platform for link-building. What I like most is the ability to customize and find the perfect link for each client on a case-by-case basis. It’s easy to use and gives a variety of different options to filter through. From the topic to country, budget, traffic numbers etc, there’s plenty of room to adapt and pick the best link for your client. I would highly recommend SERPzilla for your link-building.”

In other words, it combines the efficiency of automation with the strategic nuance of manual selection.

When to Invest in Link-Building

One caveat: links alone won’t save a weak SEO strategy.

At SERPsculpt, we always start with content that converts: competitor comparisons, alternatives, pricing breakdowns etc before scaling link-building. A site with no authority may win some early rankings through hyper-targeted content and zero search volume keywords. But to compete long-term in competitive SERPs, links are the multiplier.

Think of it like a boxing match: you can jab with good content, but you’ll need strong backlinks to throw the knockout punch.

Final Thoughts

Niche relevant backlinks are one of the most important (and misunderstood) levers in SEO. They not only improve rankings but also drive referral traffic that actually converts.

The challenge is acquiring them consistently without wasting time. That’s why I use Serpzilla. It gives me the flexibility to find and secure high-quality links that align with each client’s niche.

If you’re serious about SEO growth, don’t chase link numbers for vanity. Focus on relevance, authority, and business impact. The right links in the right places make all the difference.
